10 in Roman numerals is X. 10 is a single X. It is one of the seven basic symbols. In lowercase it is x, and the number is ten. With one letter, X is shorter than both IX (9) and XI (11).
How X is built
tens10 = 10 → X
10 is a single X.
What sets X apart
- X repeats and subtracts
- X may be repeated up to three times, XXX being 30, and it can stand before L and C to subtract: XL is 40 and XC is 90.
- Two places change
- 10 is a round step: the tens and ones change at once, and IX becomes X, one letter shorter.
- Twice 5
- 10 is twice 5 (V), but writing V twice does not work: VV is not valid. V is never repeated.
- Doubled: 20
- Double it and you reach 20 (XX): every letter of X simply doubles.
- A tenth of it
- X is the numeral for 1, I, with each letter moved up one rank.
