5 in Roman numerals is V. 5 has its own symbol, V. It is one of the seven basic symbols. In lowercase it is v, and the number is five. With one letter, V is shorter than both IV (4) and VI (6).
How V is built
ones5 = 5 → V
5 has its own symbol, V.
What sets V apart
- V is never repeated
- V is a five-symbol: it is never doubled, since VV would simply be X, and never written before a larger letter. It still takes part in subtraction as the larger half: IV is 4.
- One letter shorter
- From 4 to 5 only the ones change, IV becoming V, and the numeral loses one letter.
- Doubled: 10
- Double it and you reach 10 (X): none of the letters carry over: V becomes X.
- Times ten
- Multiply by ten and each letter moves up one rank: V becomes L, the numeral for 50.
